Why seasickness happens
Motion sickness comes from a mismatch between what your eyes see and what your inner ear feels. On a boat, rolling and pitching can trigger nausea, dizziness and tiredness, especially in people who also feel sick in cars. The good news: most people are fine on calm days and short routes.
Choose the right route
Short trips to sandbars, snorkel reefs close to shore or the natural pool keep you in shallower, more protected water. Long open-water crossings are where motion builds up. From Bayahibe, the Saona side is often more sheltered than the Atlantic-facing east coast.
On a private charter you can tell the captain you are sensitive to motion. They can pick a calmer route, shorten crossings and stop more often. That is one of the biggest advantages over fixed group tours.
Choose the right boat
Catamarans have two hulls and roll much less than single-hull boats, which makes them the most comfortable choice for motion-sensitive guests. Larger yachts are also steady. Speedboats are fast and reach stops quickly, but you feel each wave more.
Choose the right time
Morning seas are usually calmer before the afternoon wind picks up. Plan your charter early in your trip, so you can move it if the forecast is windy, and not the morning after a late night.
On-board tips that help
Sit near the middle or back of the boat, where motion is lowest, and keep your eyes on the horizon. Fresh air helps, so avoid staying inside a cabin. Eat a light breakfast, drink water and avoid heavy alcohol before and during the crossing.
Getting in the water at the stop often makes people feel better right away. Tell the crew early if you feel unwell; they are used to it and can help.
Medication and remedies
Over-the-counter motion-sickness tablets and patches work best when taken before boarding, as the label says. Ask a pharmacist or doctor which is right for you, especially for children, pregnancy or other medication. Ginger and acupressure wristbands help some people.
